NYC Announces ‘Green New Deal’
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced $14 billion in investments to ensure a nearly 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Dubbed the Green New Deal, New York City is mandating the reduction of emissions from vehicles and all large existing buildings, as well as requiring government operations to convert to 100% clean electricity and banning all-glass building facades unless they meet specific performance requirements.
New York is the first city in the world to penalize all existing buildings exceeding 25,000 square feet--of which there are 50,000 citywide--if they don’t make efficiency upgrades that lower their energy usage and emissions.
