How did you first get involved in construction?
I’m a civil engineer and worked in the architectural and engineering industry for many years. After almost 30 years in the consulting world, an opportunity was presented to join a construction management firm, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I owe a lot to a few people who helped me get started.
What is your favorite family recipe? Can you make it?
Apple pie. And yes, I can—Mom taught me well.
Is your glass half-full or half-empty?
Mostly full.
What are the top three qualities a team leader should have?
Drive, good communication skills and empathy.
Is participation in industry associations and events important to you?
I feel industry events are important for anyone in any industry. For those of us who are relationship-driven, industry groups play an even larger role in how we do business. Mixing friendships with business is rewarding in multiple ways, so those groups are a great way to live, work and play with likeminded people.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The chase, of course. Every day brings new challenges—either issues on projects or new business opportunities. Either way, the small wins make you get up and do it again the next day. Stack those small wins together and it’s a great, crazy business.
What is your personal motto?
“Be all in.” Working with people who are passionate and invested are the best. I’ll take someone with passion who puts in extra effort every day over someone with exceptional skills that is indifferent.
