With an established wellness program that promotes healthy living for employees, the Baltimore office of
Cianbro Corporation decided it wanted to share that message with the community. Last September, which was designated
Hunger Action Month, proved to be the perfect opportunity.
Cianbro employee Brenna Frania was familiar with the
Maryland Food Bank and knew her company was in a position to help the organization. She enlisted the help of colleague Brian Walsh to put together a food drive and a golf tournament to raise funds and collect food to donate.

“I knew what great work the Maryland Food Bank does for the entire state of Maryland,” Frania says. “Cianbro is a health advocate, and we wanted to link the two together.”
Cianbro began the food drive Sept. 1 with a goal of collecting 200 pounds of food. The initiative culminated at a charity golf outing at Compass Point Golf Course in Pasadena, Md., on Sept. 17.
More than 100 golfers participated in the event, including Cianbro employees, suppliers, sponsors and customers. Closest to the pin and longest drive were just two of the many contests featured at the event.
Food collection continued at the golf course, with one company going above and beyond Cianbro’s expectations by delivering a large wooden crate filled with food.
Additionally, the winner of a 50/50 raffle donated the winnings back to the Maryland Food Bank. At the end of the day, Cianbro doubled its initial goal with a donation of 400 pounds of food. The company also raised $6,000 for the Maryland Food Bank.

“Our goal was to put food on the table for hungry Marylanders who would have otherwise gone without—and we did just that,” Frania says. Cianbro’s wellness program encourages, educates and supports team members and their families in making healthy mental, physical and financial lifestyle choices on a daily basis. Cianbro is one of four organizations in the country to be honored with The Wellness Council of America’s Platinum Award, recognizing effective worksite wellness programs.
Cianbro Corporation operates out of three states and is a member of the
Baltimore Metro,
Chesapeake Shores,
Connecticut,
Empire State,
Maine and
Massachusetts chapters of Associated Builders and Contractors.
