Rugged Devices Boast Lower Failure Rates

  Non-rugged mobile devices fail more than three times as often as rugged devices in business environments, and rugged devices average 46 percent lower total cost of ownership, according to a new study from Kyocera Communications Inc. 

California Implements Energy Benchmarking Law

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 802 into law, implementing the state’s commercial building benchmarking program and expanding it to cover large multifamily housing. 

Online Directory Launched for Wood Reuse

  The American Wood  Council and Canadian Wood Council have partnered with the Building Materials Reuse Association to develop an online North American directory ( outlining reuse and recycling options for wood and wood products. 

Field and Fleet Personnel Value Mobile Tech

Seventy percent of field and fleet management personnel expect budget increases for mobile technology during the next five years as they focus on the strategic priorities of revenue generation, operational efficiency and operating costs, according to Zebra Technologies Corporation’s 2015 Field Operations Vision Study. 

IRS Curtails Automatic Extensions for W-2 Forms

Under recently proposed and temporary regulations, the ability to file for an automatic W-2 filing extension will be eliminated on Dec. 31, 2016. Instead, a single 30-day extension will be available by application for the 2017 filing season and later. 

House Approves Bipartisan Permitting Bill

  The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Responsibility and Professionally Invigorating Development (RAPID) Act (H.R. 349), which would streamline the process for developers trying to obtain environmental permits and approvals for their projects. The bill also would establish concepts, definitions and best practices to ensure the federal review and permitting process is efficient and transparent. 

Demand for HVACR Workers Exceeds Supply

  Three new reports from the HVACR Workforce Development Foundation estimate 115,000 heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) technicians will be needed by 2022 to fill jobs due to retirements and anticipated growth in the industry, yet only 21,000 students graduated from post-secondary HVACR programs in 2015. 

Construction Starts to Rise 6 Percent in 2016

Nonresidential building starts are forecasted to rise 9 percent. The non-building sector should retreat 14 percent following strong gains in 2015 that resulted from the completion of liquefied natural gas terminals in the Gulf Coast.
