Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) 2016 Safety Performance Report documents how proactive safety practices can dramatically reduce recordable incidents up to 86 percent, making the best-performing companies 720 percent safer than the industry average. The report is based on more than 1,700 sets of unique company data gathered from construction, civil engineering and specialty trade firms participating in ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP). Key findings include:
  • Companies that attained the highest level of STEP participation (Diamond) reduced their TRIR by 86 percent compared to the Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.
  • Companies with a robust substance abuse policy reduced their DART by 80 percent compared to those with no program in place.
  • Conducting a new hire safety orientation exceeding 195 minutes in length reduced their TRIR by 93 percent compared to one lasting less than 75 minutes.
