We have had proven success adopting new technologies and implementing them into our processes. The training and education of both those utilizing the technologies as well as those impacted by the change is critical for team buy-in and successful implementation.

More intelligent scheduling is the next step moving forward in the utilization of technology. I’d like to see more project teams bringing full trade collaboration into the schedule development and tracking process, as we have done for the trade coordination process, and then tying the schedule to the model.

I’d like to see less reliance on technology as the “answer” to our workforce needs. What we do is extremely complicated, and the knowledge of how all of the parts and pieces go together—and the relationships among them—is critical to project success. Being proficient with technology is only knowing how to use the instrument; understanding the sequences, relationships and logic creates the symphony.

We have experienced transformative success through the use of new technologies during the last three to five years. Spatial coordination tools (i.e., BIM) that were primarily designed to eliminate waste and rework through clash detection during design have served that purpose very well, but secondarily have provided the impetus and motivation to knock down the traditional knowledge silos that have suppressed collaboration in our industry for decades.

Additionally, mobile QA/QC platforms, cloud-based file sharing platforms, 3-D laser scanning and other tools have provided a level of quality, accuracy and real-time communication that were unheard of only a few years ago.

Our industry still struggles to resolve the liability concerns that surround collaborative design, particularly in the form of contracts and insurance, but I am confident that if all owners and architects get on board and embrace these technologies, collectively we can find solutions to all concerns.
