For the first time ever, more than half of construction projects exceeding $10 million are being completed through design-build delivery, according to research conducted by RSMeans on behalf of the Design-Build Institute of America. Prior to the economic downturn, design-build spiked from 29 percent of the nonresidential market in 2005 to 36 percent in 2008. For the last three years, it has held steady at around 40 percent. Data from nearly 1 million U.S. construction projects revealed design-build is most prevalent on the West Coast. Seventy percent of construction dollars go toward design-build in Oregon, followed by 59 percent in California and 56 percent in Washington. In terms of sectors, the military uses design-build on 81 percent of its projects. Even when military projects are taken out of the equation, Oregon still performs the most design-build, followed by Michigan.
