The Maryland General Assembly is considering legislation that would force many business ownersto implement paid sick and safe leave policies. The policies would require that all full-time employees earn one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked (capped at 56 hours per year). Accrued hours also could be used to care for family members or for mental health treatment in the case of domestic or sexual assault. Many business groups, including Associated Builders and Contractors, oppose the measures on the grounds the bill language is too vague and that most companies already offer sick leave, making government mandates unnecessary. The Maryland Earned Sick and Safe Leave Act (H.B. 0968/S.B. 0753) is sponsored by Del. John Olszewski Jr. (D) in the House and Catherine E. Pugh (D) in the Senate.
