Social media law is a relatively new area for companies active in the construction industry, and the laws around this topic, much like the networks themselves, are evolving at a rapid pace. Legal counsel should be poised to help businesses efficiently develop a social media policy and be available to provide advice on content before it’s posted, should there be any concerns on the subject. 

A New Delivery Method for Construction Management Education

  In school, skills and subjects tend to be taught in “buckets.” Later, graduates arrive at a jobsite and everything they learned from the buckets—estimating, safety, scheduling, accounting and so on—need to be combined into a heavy duty mixer. How often is the estimate discussed without the schedule or budget? Everything intertwines and mixes together. As such, schools need to align education with the real world and account for the learning styles of newer generations. 

There Is Pervasive Non-compliance With the IBC for Fire-rated HVAC Assemblies

  A recent multi-state market analysis has revealed that industry standard horizontal HVAC fire-rated duct assemblies are not in compliance with requirements of the International Building Code (IBC).  

Widely used in multi-story and commercial structures of all types, horizontal HVAC fire-rated duct assemblies serve a basic purpose: to manage hot gases for a period of time during a fire so occupants and first responders are safe. Specifically, these fire-rated duct systems must be rated for two hours or more. 

DOL to Reward Employers for Hiring Veterans

  As directed by the HIRE Vets Act President Trump recently signed, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is establishing a program to reward employers who hire veterans and who support the veteran community. Gold and Platinum HIRE Vets Medallion awards will be available for large employers, and similar awards will be created for small and mid-sized employers. Criteria for receiving these awards include the percentage of employees who are veterans; percentage of veteran employees who are retained; establishment of veterans’ assistance and training programs; employment of dedicated human resources professionals for veterans; and income and tuition support for veterans.

Apprenticeship and CTE Policies Begin to Take Shape

  President Donald Trump signed an executive order that will allow industries to build innovative workforce development systems that address glaring skills gaps. With the construction industry currently facing a workforce shortage of as many as 500,000 jobs, Associated Builders and Contractors says this action is an important first step to allow more entryways into becoming a construction professional. Full implementation of Executive Order 13801 will require further rulemaking.

Fighting Hunger One Can at a Time

In the past five years, Dixon Hughes Goodman (DHG), a public accounting firm with more than 2,000 employees in 12 states, has donated nearly 3.8 million pounds of food to hunger relief organizations through its Count the Cans initiative. This year alone, the firm donated 593,464 pounds of food and 12,020 pounds of pet food.
