Answering the Call for Help

An old cell phone can be turned into free minutes for soldiers to call home. That’s the message the Arizona Builders Alliance sent to its members earlier this year, and they responded by collecting 1,015 phones—equivalent to 507 hours (30,450 minutes) of calling time for overseas military members.

Showcasing Cars for a Cause

An integral part of the community service culture at Choate Construction is helping the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation get closer to finding a cure for the disease, one step at a time. This year, Choate’s annual “Cars & ’Q for a Cause” event raised a record-breaking $175,985 to contribute to the CF Foundation.

Making a Teen’s Treehouse Wish Come True

The ABC Greater Michigan Chapter granted a 15-year-old young man’s wish for a treehouse at its 30th annual fundraiser, which brought in $30,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Building a Culture of Caring

Creating a culture that helps a company retain employees, win work and leave a positive impression on the community can be a difficult challenge. For The Beck Group, based in Dallas, success has come from a culture of caring that permeates all areas of the business.

A Fresh Start in 'Devon's Den'

In the wake of tragedy, it’s amazing to see what a community can accomplish. For Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) New Orleans/Bayou Chapter, working together to help a paralyzed football player live more comfortably showed that contractors often invest in their communities on a highly personal level.

Five Ways to Develop and Retain Young Professionals

It’s no secret that companies are facing generational gaps within their workforce, inside and outside of the construction industry. It is  important to understand this challenge and promote ways for young professionals to continue developing into high-performing employees and leaders. Retaining the younger generation entering the workforce can be done effectively and without making a large financial investment.

Creating World-Class Partnerships

World-class teamwork can be achieved regardless of project delivery method or circumstances (e.g., personnel or site conditions) so long as each stakeholder’s senior management team is committed to the process. If that commitment remains intact, a world-class partnership can emerge in as little as five months.

A New Meaning to Hands-On Training

Apprentices from Associated Builders and Contractors' Hawaii Chapter get to put their skills to work outside the classroom, but it’s not on an average jobsite. Through a partnership with Honolulu Habitat for Humanity, craft trainees get real-life experience, and local families in need get new homes.

Putting Values Into Action

Project V5 is a unique charitable program in which proceeds from the scrap metal collected on Power Design’s jobsites are deposited into an accumulating fund. The money is allocated throughout the year to nonprofit organizations selected by employees who submit a request for funding to support a local or national cause they are passionate about.

Best in Show

In just three years, Clark Construction’s Tampa, Fla., office and members of the local community have raised more than $65,000 via a car show benefitting Everyday Blessings. The nonprofit organization allows siblings who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect to stay together in a safe and stable environment and provides them with the support they need.
